Race commentary: Kappa Delta 5k, Ruston, La.
Race day was slightly overcast with a slight breeze and
in the upper 60s. The course was primarily run on a wide trail,
which provided for friendly passing, with some running on the single
track mountain bike trail, and a very small portion on asphalt. It was
lined with easy to follow course markers and ran the perimeter of
the park through a series of rolling hills, a few stream crossings,
a number climbs, and two substantial downhills. I wouldn't call this a
treacherous race, but far more difficult than the traditional flat
course run on 5K road races. It brings back the flavor of cross country
with larger hills than available at home (Lafayette area).
The 5K was followed by a one mile race, which was timed that one could run both if they so chose. It was run around the lake, which has an asphalt trail.
Bring your bike and ride the trail afterward. Both are definitely worth
the drive.
