The list of legends in the Lafayette area is a short one but it
got longer by one this past Sunday when Tori Champagne qualified for the
IronMan Triathlon World Championships, contested each fall in Kona, Hawaii.
She joins Charles Brenke and Ashley Lasalle as the only local
triathletes to have achieved this distinction. I am not going to go into a
lengthy dissertation about why this is one of the most difficult and noteworthy
achievements in athletics. Suffice it to say that there is a long list of
superbly conditioned and hugely motivated athletes who have tried for years
without breaking through. 'Nuff said.
