Crowley High 5 K Rice Festival Run/Walk

Saturday, October 19, 2002

The Rice Festival 5K run, one of the oldest races, has been part of the festival for years. On this beautiful fall morning, area runners enjoyed the scenic route, which brings them through the beautiful historic district that’s showered with one hundred-year-old oak trees. The last leg of the race brought runners down Main Street, scented with the aroma of the best of Cajun foods from the food booths set up for the festival. The finish line faced the courthouse and bandstand, which was the stage for honoring many dignitaries of the festival.

And this year’s 5K was a heated race for first place till the finish. Jeremy Cobb, a young cross-country runner from Teurlings, was the overall winner. Our own CRRC member, Jason Gossen place second. Jason represented us very well, staying almost shoulder to shoulder with Jeremy. He was nipped by a few seconds in the end, but he gallantly accepted the challenge of a much younger man.

Talking to race director Kim Cummins, she reported the race participation doubled from last year and she was very gracious for the assistance of the CRRC and for the numerous volunteers. At the scene was past race director Jim Meche energetically participating in doing his “thing” by helping Kim.

There were a few slight changes this year: race benefits went to the Crowley High Cheerleaders instead of the Athletic Department and they did not have the one-mile run/walk. Race cards were put on a board so runners could view the results and time.

NOTE: Overall Race Results are accurate in the finishing order, but due to several “race bandits”, the times may be inaccurate. We apologize for the inconvenience. Betty Girouard.
