1999 Hibernia Freedom Mile
It was hot, it was humid, it was fast. Depite the difficult conditions the times were very good in the 1999 version of the Hibernia Freedom Mile. It was in the mid 80's and humid for the 5 races that were run in the downtown area next to the Centroplex. 138 runners braved the conditions to participate in this group of mile runs, part of the Louisiana Grand Prix Series. Even with the these less-than-optimal conditions the quality of the times were great. A total of 15 male runners finished the mile in under 5:00! The overall male winner of the open mile was Brett Kirk (Baton Rouge) with a time of 4:25. The overall female winner of the open mile was Inka Mims (Baton Rouge) with a time of 5:54. The Youth (14 and under) winners were Joshua Girod (male) with a 5:11 and Kayla Schneeweiss (female) with a 6:00. The overall Masters winners were Jerry Yunker (male) with a 4:54 and Petra Munro (female) with a 6:05. The overall Grandmasters winners were Pat Hambrick (male) with a 4:52 and Yvonne Lee (female) with a 6:30.
The races involved a good range of participants. The youngest participants in the mile runs were Christopher Buck (6) and Randee White (10). Even younger budding athletes participated in the parent-child half-mile fun run. The participants with the longest life experience were Marion Neyrey (72) and Mary Norkauer (74). In addition to the Baton Rouge runners, there were strong groups of runners from New Orleans and Lafayette.
Next years race is being planned for the same place on July 4, 2000.
