Cajun Constructor's Twilight Classic 5K Run- Race Report

Baton Rouge, LA

August 21, 1999

Cajun Constructors and Club South Runners continued the oldest continuously running 5K race in Baton Rouge - the 19th Twilight Classic. This year's race was also the state championship 5K and part of the Louisiana State Grand Prix series. The weather for the race was, as expected, hot and humid, but the rain never developed. Even with these tough conditions there were 270 runners that participated in the race. The race and post-race party made this one the premier fitness events in Baton Rouge.

The overall male winner of the race was William Steele with a fine time of 16:36, especially considering this was his second 5K race of the day. The overall female winner was Margo Braud with a time of 19:28. The male and female master's winners were Jerry Yunker (17:11) and Dana Lewczyk (21:55). The female and male grandmaster's winners were Sherrin Lafleur (24:45) and George Bourke (19:52). There were a number of other outstanding times among the various age groups, particularly in the sub-20 year olds.

One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of Jennifer Beck and Raisin Cane. They gave an outstanding performance including an unveiling of a potential 9-year old superstar singer. The Jambalaya by Bret Smith was exceptional. If you missed this event you missed a great party and a fun race.

Club South Runners can't say enough about the directors of this year's race (Donna Bourke and Sally Hunter) and the support (monetary, material and manpower) that was given by Cajun Constructors. We also thank all of the continuing sponsors including  Red Stick Sports, Coca Cola and Powerade and Mockler Beverage (Budweiser).
